Fear Is A Powerful Emotion
– Ponderings:

2 Timothy 1:7: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
There are times when I read something and question its meaning. Many of us, especially when we read the Bible, have been taught not to question but I strongly believe that God wants us to struggle, question, and ponder what Scripture has to tell us. This verse raises questions for me. It starts by saying that God has not given us a spirit of fear, yet we fear so many things. The Bible repeatedly says, “Do not be afraid.” Why would it say that so many times if it isn’t a human tendency to fear?
Fear is a powerful emotion. Whether it’s fear of failure, rejection, or the unknown, fear paralyzes us from living and hinders our faith. But Paul reminds Timothy—and us—that fear doesn’t come from God. God doesn’t want us to live afraid and to help us get around our fears, God gives us three gifts: power, love, and our ability to think and reason.
Power reminds us that we are not weak or alone. With God’s help, we can conquer our fear. When we feel inadequate, the power of the Holy Spirit enables us to stand firm and move forward in faith.
Love drives out fear. When we operate in love, we focus less on ourselves and more on Christ and others. Love emboldens us to serve, forgive, and trust God’s plan.
A sound mind keeps us from being ruled by anxiety and panic. It gives us the clarity and discipline to think and focus on God’s truth rather than fear’s deception.
Today, if fear tries to creep into your heart, remember: it’s not from God. Instead, lean into the power, love, and sound mind God has given you. Remember that God is with you, reminding you there is no need to be afraid.
Prayer: Lord, thank you for reminding me that fear is not from you. Fill me with your power, love, and peace of mind. Help me walk boldly in faith, knowing that you are with me. In Jesus’ name, Amen
