Meditate On God’s Word

– Ponderings:

I was engaged in random internet surfing yesterday (which is how I could share in church that it was not only Groundhog Day but also National Tater Tot Day and National Ukelele Day) when I learned another fun fact. I can’t promise this comes from any reputable study, as with most everything posted online, but here’s what I learned. Reading and studying burns more calories than simply resting. It seems that brain activity and concentration burn calories.

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” (Joshua 1:8; NIV).

“Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of God.” (Romans 10:9).

When Joshua took leadership after Moses’ death, he faced the enormous task of continuing to lead God’s people. Moses was old and experienced; Joshua was young and inexperienced. Moses was a great and powerful leader, known for his direct meetings with God. Joshua was unproven. And, despite Moses’ qualifications and proven abilities, the people still repeatedly disobeyed him. How was Joshua going to succeed?

At the very beginning, God came to Joshua with advice. God instructed him to meditate on His Word day and night. Why? Because knowing and obeying God’s truth would be the foundation of his success.

To meditate on God’s Word means more than simply reading it. It involves reflecting, studying, internalizing, and putting it into practice. In our fast-paced world, we often prioritize productivity over reading and studying. But God’s promise still stands—when we center our lives on his Word, seeking wisdom and understanding, we will experience success that goes beyond material gain. It’s a success rooted in God’s presence, guidance, and peace. And, it seems, we can lose weight along the way!

How often do you take time to truly meditate on God’s Word?

How can you incorporate the study of Scripture into your daily routine (with the same consideration as getting in your steps or working out at the gym)?

Prayer: Lord, help me to love your Word and meditate on it daily. Let my success be defined by you, rather than by the world’s definition. Guide me in your truth so I may walk on the path you have set before me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
