The weather has certainly been “generous” with its rain lately. At this point, I think I’ve seen enough clouds to qualify as an amateur meteorologist. Every time I look outside, another dark cloud appears as if it has been patiently waiting behind the nearest tree. This morning is pleasant and cooler … but cloudy.
Clouds have a curious way of changing our mood. A bright blue sky makes us optimistic. Thick gray clouds can make us wonder if we should have built an ark instead of planting tomatoes (or whatever it is that you gardening types have planted). There are times when I truly enjoy the sound of rain as I drift off to sleep. Light rain, that is. Not torrential downpours accompanied by howling wind, crashing thunder, and flashes of lightning.
But Scripture has a surprising perspective on clouds.
“Clouds and thick darkness surround him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.” (Psalm 97:2)
These aren’t the words we expect when speaking of God. We’d probably write, “Sunshine surrounds him.” Instead, the psalmist reminds us that there are moments when God is hidden from our view—not absent, but hidden.
Clouds don’t mean the sun has disappeared. It’s still up there in the sky. The clouds just mean we can’t see it for the moment.
The same is often true in our walk with God. There are seasons when answers are delayed, prayers seem to bounce off the ceiling, and the path ahead is wrapped in fog. We sometimes wonder if God has “stepped away” from us or is looking in another direction. But the reality is that God may be closer than ever, inviting us to trust what we can’t yet see.
The rain eventually ends. The clouds part. The sun shines, and the grass grows. And somehow we discover God’s presence with us, cultivating a deeper faith.
Perhaps today’s clouds aren’t just clouds … but an invitation to sense the presence of God.
Prayer: Gracious God, thank you for being present in both sunshine and storm. When the skies of life grow dark, and your purposes seem hidden, help me trust in your presence. Teach me to see beyond today’s clouds and rest in the certainty of your love. Through Christ, my Lord. Amen.
