Last night was “exciting.” I took Tori outside, reached down to pull a weed (admittedly, my fault), and got stung by a bee. I haven’t been stung in years, so the question of the evening was, “How allergic am I?” When I was young, I wasn’t. Then, somewhere in my 30s, that changed and bee stings became a big deal, necessitating a hospital run. Last night, I managed with caffeine and OTC medication, but this morning my finger still hurts. It’s amazing, isn’t it? That tiny bee, created by God no less, packs a powerful punch!
It got me thinking about how often the smallest things have the greatest impact.
A few careless words can damage – or deepen – a friendship. An attitude can sour – or brighten – an entire day. A small compromise – or a positive change – can become a habit. Weeds, left alone, multiply and choke out flowers—which, now that I think about it, is what got me into trouble in the first place.
So often in life, situations confront us with positive and negative options. Little choices bring powerful results.
A brief prayer can change a perspective. A word of encouragement can change an outlook. A simple act of kindness can change a day.
We tend to look for God in the dramatic, yet so often He works through the ordinary and insignificant. Maybe that’s because God knows something we often forget: Little things matter.
So today, pay attention to the “little” things. Pull the weeds in your life before they take over. Offer the encouraging word. Pray the short prayer. Extend the small kindness.
And if you happen to see a literal weed … you might take a lesson from me and think about letting the weed win … at least for today.
