It’s Labor Day – Embrace Rest

“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” — Psalm 4:8

I “explained” to Tori as we went to bed that we could sleep in a bit this morning. She cocked her head and appeared to listen. And then I woke up at 5:45 this morning while she was still snoring. So much for that! But perhaps there will be an afternoon nap later.

Did you know that the Bible is highly supportive of naps? Sleep is actually a beautiful act of faith. Think about it—when you are fast asleep, hopefully not drooling on your pillow, you’re completely out of control. You aren’t checking emails, managing schedules, or fixing problems. You’re trusting those around you to let you nap, and on God to keep the universe running.

The good news? God’s got it covered. For at least this one day, God doesn’t need your help. You don’t have to keep an eye open just in case. On this day we call Labor Day, go ahead and embrace rest. Enjoy the picnic. Spend time with family or friends. Read a book. Listen to music. Watch a movie. Tomorrow you can resume your regularly scheduled programming.

The universe will keep spinning without you, and the world will survive just fine.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the luxury of doing nothing. Help me to shut down my racing thoughts and trust you. If I happen to drift off while trying to read or pray, please accept my snoring as a joyful noise of rest. Amen.
