This morning, for a change, there isn’t a cloud in the sky. Of course, that could change any minute! But after days of rain and overcast skies, the blue above is a wonderful sight. I found myself sitting outside with Tori earlier, looking up, and thinking, Where did they go?
That thought reminded me of a time in the Bible when the people of Israel weren’t looking for all the clouds or just any cloud. They were watching for just one, and a special one at that.
The Book of Exodus tells the story of the people of Israel journeying through the desert wilderness. It was a wandering time of indecision and insecurity. There were so many unknowns and new experiences. But God went before them “by day in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way.”
But that cloud wasn’t a random part of a random weather pattern; it was a visible reminder of God’s presence and direction. When the cloud moved, they moved. When it stopped, they stopped. Their journey wasn’t determined by the shortest route or the easiest path but by faithfully following where God led.
We don’t think about clouds leading us. As kids, we stare up at the clouds and look for images of animals or other objects. As adults, we mostly wonder if they’re going to bring rain or snow or change our plans. We don’t chase – or follow – them. But if we did, I suspect I would resemble someone chasing every cloud in the sky instead of paying attention to the one God has placed before me. I too often expend a great deal of energy running in circles and, in the process, missing God’s attempt to lead me on my way.
Perhaps that’s why today, with its cloudless sky, is such a fitting reminder. The point was never to have lots of clouds. The point was to keep our eyes on the right one. God’s leading may not always be dramatic, but it always comes from a place of love.
Prayer: Faithful God, thank you for never leaving me to wander aimlessly and alone. As you led Israel through the wilderness, lead me today. Give me eyes to recognize your direction, a heart willing to trust your timing, and courage to follow wherever you lead. Keep me from being distracted, and help me fix my attention on you alone.
