A New Calendar With Clean Squares

I suspect some of you may read this later than usual. I didn’t exactly “see” the New Year come, but I heard it. Someone spent a lot of money on fireworks!

Yesterday, while at the church, I discarded my 2025 calendar and pulled out my 2026. A new calendar with clean squares and lines just waiting to be filled. We tell ourselves this will be the year we finally get it all right. Or at least get it better. Or, in any event, write it down in a planner.

Scripture offers a simple reminder for new days: “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24). Just today. One day at a time.

So perhaps the holiest New Year’s resolution is simply this: receive the day as a gift. Drink the coffee while it’s still hot. Laugh at yourself. Tell someone you love them. Trust that God is present.

One day. A lifetime and more of grace.

Prayer: God of new beginnings, thank you for this day you have made. Help me step into the year ahead with joy, trust, and a light heart. Amen.
