    Meditate at Eight: PonderingsI've been thinking about storms. I've noticed the wind has made its presence known lately, making it feel colder than the thermometer might indicate. So, I turned this morning to Mark's account of Jesus quieting the storm. In short, Jesus and the disciples got into a boat one evening to cross the Sea of Galilee. Jesus, tired from a long day of confusing crowds with parables about the kingdom of God, immediately went to the back of the boat and fell asleep on a cushion (that just happened to be handy). Then, as they got out into the lake, they encountered a violent storm. For some reason, although nowhere mentioned in Mark's account, the theme song to Gilligan's Island comes to mind: "their tiny ship was tossed." Jesus, awakened by the panicking disciples who wondered if he even cared about them, "Got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm." (Mark 4:39). Talk about a sudden ending to a dramatic story! In Lent, as in other seasons of life, we face our own storms—uncertainties, fears, and struggles that shake our faith. The disciples, many seasoned fishermen, knew the power of the sea and the storm. Yet, when frightened, they couldn't understand how Jesus could be sleeping. "Teacher," they asked, "don't you care if we drown?"Their question—"Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?"—echoes in our hearts when we feel abandoned in our suffering. Jesus, for them, calmed both the storm and their fears with a simple command: “Quiet! Be still!” And Jesus offers to do the same for us. Lent invites us to trust Jesus, even when he seems silent. He has power over the storms within and around us. In the middle of life's tempests, will we trust that he is with us and ask for help? Jesus never promises that we won't face storms. He promises that he will be in the boat with us. And if Jesus is with us, if we stay in the boat with him, our tiny ship may be tossed, but we will make it through the storm intact. Prayer: Lord, in the storms of life, help me trust that you are with me. Teach me to rely on your peace rather than my fear.
