Why Did God Create The Leviathan?

– Ponderings:

I have something to confess this morning. I turned on my heat last night. The rain and wind created just enough of a chill in the house to make it uncomfortable. I play this little game every year. How long can I avoid turning on the heat? I feel like every day I resist, I “cheat” the gas company out of some money. Is that normal??? If not, please don’t tell me!

I’ve been engaging in some unusual “pondering” this morning. Here are a few questions for you:

Why do people say – as a good thing – that they “slept like a baby” when babies wake up every two hours?

Why does a round pizza come in a square box?

Do the Alphabet song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star have the same tune? Why did you just try singing the two songs to see?

Sometimes we need to think about serious things, but there are also times to just have fun. When you think about God, do you think about laughing, partying, asking silly questions, and simply enjoying life? If not, you should!

Lost in the middle of all the Old Testament rules, there are several passages we tend to overlook. Time after time, God tells his people to set aside time to party and have fun … not just for an hour or two, but for a week and sometimes more. In commenting on worship, God also reminded the people to come and to serve with joyfulness and gladness of heart. When the people of Israel returned to their land after years in exile, Jeremiah says they did so with laughter, fun, and dancing. We are promised that one of the first things we will do when Christ comes again and we are all together as one people of faith is to sit down at a gigantic feast and party!

The Bible teaches us many things about God, but here’s an interesting one. It comes from Psalm 104:26. The psalmist is writing about how God created the world, the light and darkness, the grass and the birds, the mountains, the lions, and the people. He comes to the sea, great and wide, with living things small and great. Then the author mentions something called the Leviathan (this is the same creature that swallowed Jonah). We’re not sure what the Leviathan was or is. A whale? Lochness or some other mystical sea creature? A really, really big fish?

But here’s the point to ponder about God. Why did God create the Leviathan in the first place? The answer: because God could and because God wanted to watch it play in the sea. Its sole purpose was to swim around, jump in the water, and bring God joy. What does that say about God? What does that say about how God feels about us and how we should approach life?

I encourage you today to find something to laugh about … and when you do laugh, think of God laughing with you.
